Dirgelwch yr Ogof

The smugglers' coves of Ceredigion are the backdrop to Dirgelwch yr Ogof which recounts the legend of Sion Cwilt a local squire’s son turned smuggler after irredeemable losses at sea threaten the family’s tenure at Glascoed. The novel is a historical thriller set mostly on the coastal path between Cwmtydu and Llangrannog with passing reference to the barracks town of Cardigan to the south. The text maps closely to the actual landscape revealing features that remain legendary in the area to this day including the cave of voices and the smugglers hideout at Talgarreg. There are also episodes in Brittany and London reflecting the economic migrancy between these places in the 18th century and the equal importance of journeying by land and by sea. This mapping is based on the 1977 Gomer edition. Translations from the original Welsh by Rowan O’Neill.
